HOK designed Wellmark’s headquarters to enhance the physical and emotional well-being of the health insurer’s 2,000 employees.
HOK’s design wraps the building around a hollowed out oval. An elliptical entry garden and visitor drop-off area carved into the curved building’s facade allow natural light to penetrate deep into the space.
At the time of its construction this was the world’s largest single owner-occupied office building to earn LEED Platinum certification.
Strategies for energy efficiency generate significant annual cost savings for Wellmark. Daylighting harvesting, for example, greatly reduces the need for artificial lighting. High-efficiency lighting systems with adjustable lighting controls accommodate changes in natural light levels throughout the day. The lighting power density is 28 percent less than ASHRAE standards.
