Confidential Medical Institute Aesthetic Medicine Training Facilities
Excellence in aesthetic medicine requires artistry and continuous hands-on learning as the industry evolves. This confidential medical client’s new facilities in Irvine, California, and Atlanta were designed to transform medical education from a scheduled event into an immersive learning experience. Each location operates as a global destination for visiting healthcare professionals to refine techniques, observe live demonstrations and exchange knowledge with leading practitioners, all in an environment that conveys credibility and warmth.
Design Solutions
Separating and reconnecting different user groups was the central design challenge: Different protocols for safety and privacy apply to visiting physicians, instructors, staff and live models as they move throughout the facility. The plan choreographs moments of separation and convergence, creating points of overlap in the plenary, immersion lounge and teaching environments to maintain connection between occupants without compromising protocol.
Spatial sequencing drives the experience, shaping movement as a progression rather than a series of disconnected moments. Upon arrival, an immersive digital tunnel greets guests with light and motion. Concierge services reinforce a hospitality mindset, ensuring each guest feels supported from the moment they enter.
The plenary anchors collective learning with a full-scale digital display and space for presentations and live demonstrations. Surrounding treatment rooms accommodate healthcare professionals learning new techniques. Lounges and a guest café serve as connective tissue between programs, providing spaces for informal mentorship, dialogue and community building.
Materials reinforce the client’s brand throughout both facilities: Curved walls shape circulation and reinforce a sense of openness. White oak paneling and chevron flooring introduce warmth and rhythm, while Venetian plaster provides a calm, continuous background. Reeded glass and refined brass accents punctuate key moments, and AV infrastructure, lighting systems and acoustical treatments are embedded within ceilings and millwork to preserve clean architectural lines.
HOK provided architecture, interior design and landscape services for the Irvine location, the client’s primary campus. The 20,000-sq.-ft. facility occupies a long-dormant building that required complete structural reinvention, including a new roof and extensive reinforcement, after demolition revealed significant degradation. Delivered through a design-build model, the project adjusted scope, sequencing and systems in real time without compromising design intent.
Vertical brass fins wrap the Irvine building’s exterior, a motif continued inside by a sweeping brass feature wall that draws visitors inward and orients them toward the immersion lounge. A skin care bar and dedicated VIP lounge for guest instructors further distinguish the Irvine experience, setting a hospitality standard for the global flagship. Also at this location are a hologram history wall, a discreetly integrated cadaver lab and a broadcast studio that supports virtual demonstrations and globally distributed content.
At 15,000 square feet, the Atlanta location shares Irvine’s spatial sequencing, material warmth and programmatic breadth. HOK provided interior design and sustainability services for this location.
Impact
Together the two locations establish a new standard for medical education environments where architecture supports learning. Feedback from visiting healthcare professionals highlights the professionalism and calm created through the intuitive layout, the balance between visibility and privacy, and the material warmth. The client now operates both locations as destinations where mentorship, clinical mastery and the future of aesthetic medicine converge.
