“The design must allow employees and visitors to see, hear, feel and experience both the emotional and practical benefits of the Porsche brand from the moment they first see the building. HOK's design solution boldly and progressively captured our Porsche vision and aesthetic.”
A curvy, 1.6-mile test track shoots through the lower levels of the building before vanishing into the courtyard and beyond. It’s the track—and the revs of Porsches tearing across its asphalt—that immediately connect employees and visitors to the company’s legendary sports car heritage. But the Porsche Cars North America Experience Center and Headquarters is more than just testing ground for motor sport enthusiasts. The building also brings together Porsche employees from five divisions into one sleek, high-performance space in the southern metropolitan district of Atlanta.
In addition to integrating the test track with the building, the design incorporates motor-sport-related cues throughout the center to immerse visitors in the Porsche experience while demonstrating the world-renowned capabilities of its sports cars. The track includes six driving modules designed to demonstrate the capabilities of different Porsche models. Vintage and modern Porsches are on display in a classic car gallery. The curtain wall and interior wall configurations were specially designed to keep track noise out of the interior spaces.
Visitors can see historic Porsches undergoing renovations at the restoration center. In the design studio, customers can virtually create their dream cars with fully customizable options. Restaurant 356, named after the first production Porsche, offers diners front-row seats and a balcony overlooking the test track.
HOK designed the three levels of contemporary, naturally illuminated office space, which features sit-stand workstations, to encourage collaboration and creativity among staff. A 13,000-sq.-ft. business center features state-of-the-art conference rooms, event spaces and a driving simulator lab.
The LEED Gold-certified building’s east-west exposures eliminate glare while the north-south curtain walls maximize natural light and minimize solar heat gain. A green roof links the building to the landscape while providing insulation and reducing storm water runoff. The parking area includes charging stations for Porsche’s electric vehicles. Previously home to an automobile production facility, the former brownfield site was remediated as part of the development process.
With the construction of this facility, Porsche became the first company to break ground on the 130-acre “Aerotropolis Atlanta” economic development site. Located adjacent to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest, the building and test track are a prominent symbol of the Porsche brand to passengers on arriving and departing flights. The Experience Center also is visible to travelers on the heavily trafficked I-75.
