Moscone Center Modernization

Three decades after designing the original George R. Moscone Center, HOK designed a renovation that brought new life to the famed Bay Area convention center.

Inspired by San Francisco’s distinct geography, the design introduces bright colors throughout the South, North and connector buildings.

The original building—Moscone South—is closest to the high-tech Silicon Valley corridor south of San Francisco. The colors and design details in the South lobby reflect the region’s identity as an innovation hub.

In Moscone North, the design tells the story of the Bay Area’s breathtaking parks and gardens, as well as the natural beauty of the redwood forests and Napa Valley and Sonoma vineyards to the north.

Drawing on the underground connector’s role linking the South and North halls, the design of this space uses the metaphor of the Golden Gate Bridge, with a color palette matching its “international orange.”

Energy-efficient upgrades to the building system and an operations strategy focused on sustainability make this one of the most environmentally-friendly convention centers in the U.S.
