A Cutting-Edge Medical Campus as a Downtown Hub

University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
Buffalo, New York, USA

“The big picture is that it lets us start to transform a medical culture into one that achieves excellence from internal collaboration instead of from competition.”

The University at Buffalo’s state-of-the-art medical school and integrated transit station will anchor a vibrant mixed-use district in downtown Buffalo.

When it opens in 2017, the eight-story Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences building on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus will bring 2,000 UB faculty, staff and students to downtown Buffalo each day.

The design features two L-shaped structures linked by a six-story, light-filled glass atrium – the building’s main interior “avenue.” The design, which targets LEED Gold certification, features a high-performance terra-cotta rain screen and a glass curtain wall system that brings daylight deep inside the building. The NFTA Allen Street transit hub on the medical school’s ground floor provides convenient mass transit access, furthering the development of a sustainable, vibrant community.

To bring together academia and research, the design sandwiches the three research floors between the more public parts of the medical education program on the lower floors and the more specialized, pedagogical components, such as the human anatomy suite, on the upper floors. A common atrium and second-floor “piano nobile,” or principal level, fosters collaboration between educators, researchers and the greater Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus community.

Faculty, researchers and students will have clinical responsibilities on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, which will be physically connected to the medical school by an enclosed bridge. By providing opportunities for learning, researching and credentialing for a variety of medical practitioners, the building creates a true academic medical campus.

The project “is more than a spectacular building,” said Nancy Nielsen, MD, a member of the UB Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Campaign Steering Committee. “The medical school is in the middle of a community. This is Buffalo at its best. It is going to rejuvenate downtown. It is going to serve people who need healthcare.”
