HOK relocated its Chicago studio to One Prudential Plaza, a notable mid-century tower at the north end of Millennium Park in the city’s historic downtown Loop. This move coincided with the firm’s 30th anniversary in Chicago and demonstrates its commitment to design excellence.
Completed in 1952, One Prudential Plaza was the first skyscraper built after World War II. The HOK team wanted to showcase the building’s historic structure within the new office and transform the space into a dynamic studio that pays homage to the city’s celebrated architects and design styles.
The workplace includes individual workstations, meeting rooms, a large café, multiple collaboration areas, a model shop and materials lab. The side core layout allows the studio to function as a cohesive unit, with natural light flooding the space.
When entering the studio, guests are greeted by a flexible gathering space with comfortable seating, a quartz reception desk and a striking red travertine wall reminiscent of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. A glass wall to the left provides a glimpse into the model shop. A modern geometric screen to the right offers views into the café and invites conversations about design.
The studio reflects HOK’s identity as a collaborative, people-focused design practice. The model shop and gallery walls that double as shelves illustrate the design process and encourage conversation and collaboration.
The space blends contemporary elements with natural materials to create a warm, modern environment that honors Chicago’s history. Brick detailing and exposed structural steel columns throughout evoke the city’s architectural heritage.
The neuroinclusive design accommodates diverse sensory needs and work styles. Features such as the scale of the carpets, the use of natural materials, acoustic zoning and abundant natural light all contribute to a workplace that supports the team and enhances their well-being. Conference rooms incorporate technology to promote digital equity and teamwork.
By fostering storytelling, creativity and collaboration, the design unifies HOK’s interdisciplinary practice in an authentic and sophisticated environment.
