The City of Calgary occupies approximately 1 million square feet of office space across 14 buildings. In this space, about 4,300 employees provide services for more than 1.2 million people.
HOK helped the City develop a strategy for employing more people to support the metropolitan area’s continued growth without adding office space.
The workplace strategy accommodates a 20 percent population growth in the City’s existing space. This solution includes a ratio of 70 percent workstations and 30 percent collaborative work areas. The City also would like 40 percent of its employees to be able to work without being tied to a specific physical location.
To help the City’s people understand the goals for and benefits of their new workplace, HOK developed a change management strategy that emphasized clear communication and employee engagement.
HOK’s space management team currently is providing on-site occupancy and space planning, communications and research services that support the City’s workplace effectiveness.
