2023 Emerging Talent Summits

HOK’s Emerging Talent Summits bring together young designers from across the firm to discuss industry trends and the future of HOK. Participants share ideas, hear from guest speakers and tour HOK-designed projects and other architecturally significant spaces in their host cities.

Below are highlights from our 2023 Emerging Talent Summits held in Atlanta, Kansas City and Seattle.

2023 East Coast Summit - Atlanta

Our 2023 Emerging Talent Summit in Atlanta brought together designers from HOK’s London, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Tampa, Miami and Washington, D.C., studios. Attendees discussed a variety of topics over the two-day summit, including ways HOK can take advantage of design technology and AI and adopt procedures that make it easier to incorporate sustainability and resiliency into project design.

Guest speaker Julie Ju-Youn Kim (right), chair of Georgia Tech’s School of Architecture, spoke to the group about ways to challenge and inspire future generations of designers, particularly those from underrepresented communities.

Each day ended with a field trip to an HOK-designed project. The group spent the first afternoon touring Porsche Cars North America Experience Center. The next afternoon was spent at the Emory University’s new Health Sciences Research Building II.

2023 Central Summit - Kansas City

Attended by members of our Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City and St. Louis studios, the Central Summit covered many topics over the course of two days. Conversations included talks on improving diversity within studios, accomplishing firmwide sustainability goals and making it easier to use and understand HOK tools and technology.

Guest speaker Triveece Penelton, an urban planner and civic engagement specialist, spoke to the group about building consensus through listening and mindfulness and seeking diverse viewpoints.

The summit also included field trips to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and several HOK projects, including the repositioned Lightwell tower in downtown Kansas City and the headquarters of the Polsinelli law firm.
