City of Hope Marks Significant Completion of Orange County’s Only Cancer Specialty Hospital

The HOK and Hensel Phelps design-build project expands City of Hope’s comprehensive cancer care in Southern California.

City of Hope celebrated the significant completion of its new Orange County cancer specialty hospital at a June 6 key presentation. The 73-bed facility on City of Hope’s academic cancer campus in Irvine seamlessly connects to City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, transforming cancer care in the region.

The building’s design advances healing through a hospitality-inspired, human-centered approach. Patient spaces prioritize dignity and comfort with features such as ensuite bathrooms, concealed clinical utilities, large windows offering scenic mountain views, calming material palettes and thoughtful amenities.

Treatment spaces include intensive care and medical-surgical units, operating and procedure rooms and a specialized Evaluation and Treatment Center (ETC) that alleviates the need for patients to go to an ER if they need immediate assessment or care.

“Accepting a key is a symbolic activity celebrating the opening of a door—in this case the door of new possibilities for the people of Orange County,” said City of Hope Orange County President Annette Walker. “Today, we begin the activation process, transitioning a construction site to a place of healing, discovery and hope.”

The hospital is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of the year.

“It’s rewarding to see City of Hope reach this stage of delivery,” said Hunvey Chen, regional leader of HOK’s Healthcare practice. “I’ll be even more excited later this year when the hospital opens its doors and we see firsthand the impact it has on patients, families and cancer care in Orange County and beyond.”
