Houston Airport System (HAS) has celebrated the partial opening of its new International Central Processor, a key component of the airport’s $1.458 billion terminal redevelopment program designed to elevate Houston’s status as a modern, global airport hub.
Travelers at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) are experiencing a significant upgrade as the first phase of the new International Central Processor (ICP) opened its doors on February 24. This milestone unveiling introduces a state-of-the-art Terminal E ticketing lobby, 10 streamlined TSA security screening lanes and a spacious 10-lane departures curb, promising a smoother and more efficient journey for international passengers.
“This is more than just a terminal upgrade—it’s a reimagining of the entire travel experience at Bush Airport,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “For many travelers, this is their first or last impression of Houston, and we want that impression to be world-class.”
HOK’s design features soaring ceilings, natural wood materials, clear wayfinding and durable, contemporary finishes. Floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights flood the space with daylight. The design celebrates Houston’s bayou landscape through natural local imagery, colorful public art and distinctive ‘Mozart blue’ exterior wall panels that evoke the bluebonnet (state flower), blue lacy (state dog) and the region’s waterways.
All new support systems and integrated technology enhance the airport’s operational efficiencies. Once fully complete, biometric screening, self-service check-in kiosks and modernized baggage handling systems will further streamline the passenger experience.
A new stacked roadway system improves traffic flow. The nine-lane arrivals curb is now open, and the 10 lanes at the departures curb are already improving the passenger experience at Bush Airport. A full-length canopy over the Departures curb welcomes travelers and protects them from the elements.
“Our design for the International Central Processor creates a seamless, efficient and welcoming environment,” said Alex Bernard, senior project architect at HOK. “From the spacious, light-filled interiors to the streamlined technology, every element is crafted to elevate the traveler experience. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Houston Airport System as we finalize the ICP later this year.”
The final phase of construction on the facility is expected to be completed in the fall of 2025.
