Second Skybridge Marks Another Milestone in LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B Transformation

New York Governor Kathy Hochul speaks at the opening of LaGuardia Terminal B's western skybridge.

The opening of LaGuardia Terminal B’s western skybridge means that every arriving and departing passenger will experience newly built, modern architecture and facilities from gate to curb.

Leaders from across the New York region celebrated the opening January 27 of the second pedestrian skybridge at LaGuardia Airport’s new Terminal B. All interior work on the $4 billion transformation of Terminal B is now complete.

The new Terminal B was recently awarded UNESCO’s Prix Versailles as “Best New Airport in the World.” LaGuardia is now the world’s only airport with dual pedestrian skybridges, a design feature that allows for better aircraft taxiing and more efficient airport operations. HOK led the architecture and engineering for Terminal B and its skybridges with partner WSP.

“The transformation of LaGuardia airport into a world-class destination that is internationally recognized for its beauty is an integral part of our bold vision for a new era in New York,” said Governor Kathy Hochul during the ribbon-cutting event. “Congratulations to all who made today’s milestone possible as we continue creating a whole new LaGuardia airport worthy of New York.”

“We have gone from worst to best, something no one thought was possible when this project began,” said Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “Terminal B creates a top-of-the-line passenger experience and does so in the context of world-class architecture, inspiring public art and notable, iconic, locally inspired concessions.”

Added New York City Mayor Eric Adams: “It’s time to get New York City moving again, and a world-class airport here in Queens will help us do that. This is a whole new LaGuardia, and I want to thank Governor Hochul, the Port Authority and all of our partners who helped make this happen. This is how we ‘Get Stuff Done’ together.”

The redevelopment of Terminal B was overseen by LaGuardia Gateway Partners, a consortium composed of Vantage Airport Group, Skanska, Meridiam, and JLC Infrastructure for development and equity investment. Vantage Airport Group led the redevelopment program and management of Terminal B, with Skanska Walsh as the design-build joint venture and HOK and WSP for design.
