HOK Expands Sustainable Design Practice With Addition of Two New Leaders

Rob McGill joins the London studio as the sustainable design leader and Susan Rowley joins in Toronto as a senior sustainable design specialist.

AIA, LEEP AP, WELL AP, director of sustainable design at HOK. “Their drive to create environments focused on wellness and sustainability come at a crucial time as the UK prepares to host COP 26 later this month.”

Both McGill and Rowley have extensive experience leading innovative, sustainable projects across the globe.

McGill brings 20 years of experience as an architect with an emphasis on sustainability and inclusivity in the design profession. He has participated in the design of projects in multiple markets including science and technology, healthcare, education, sports and recreation, residential and commercial. He also took part in the UK’s FLUID Diversity Mentoring Programme, which seeks to improve diversity and inclusion in the AEC industry.

McGill’s expertise includes serving as the facade design and sustainability lead on the UCLH Grafton Way Building, the UK’s first Proton Beam Therapy Hospital, which achieved the world’s highest BREEAM interim certification score for its rating scheme. He was also project architect on the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh, a world-class genetic research facility in Scotland.

McGill earned a Master of Science in Energy and Sustainable Building Design from De Montfort University as well as postgraduate diplomas in Architectural Practice and Architecture from Birmingham City University.

Rowley, a certified professional engineer, brings more than 20 years of experience in construction, sustainable building design, consulting and mechanical engineering to HOK. She uses an evidence-based design approach to help her clients transform their real estate portfolios, recruit the best talent and align with their future goals.

Rowley has held various leadership roles in sustainable design, including serving as the sustainable buildings project manager and writing the LEED MEP design specifications for the 3 million-sq.-ft. Centre Hospitalier Université de Montreal. Rowley was also a LEED certification reviewer for the Canada Green Building Council, where she audited architectural submittals for Canadian projects pursuing LEED certification for new construction and major renovations of commercial and institutional buildings.

She holds a Master of Applied Science, Faculty of Environmental Design, from the University of Montreal and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and Minor in Management from McGill University.
