HOK and NYP: A Relationship Spanning Decades
After years of planning and construction, the HOK-designed Greenberg Pavilion opened in 1997 as an important extension of the NYP/Weill Cornell Medical Center on the Upper East Side. The intricate design required the 12-story building to span six lanes of Manhattan’s FDR Drive. It provided the hospital with a state-of-the-art surgical suite, emergency department and new inpatient beds.

NYP then hired HOK to provide a real estate assessment and facility master plan for its two main campuses in Manhattan. The study offered guidance and recommendations for how the healthcare system could provide critical medical care and community services for the next three decades.

In 2011, HOK designed upgrades to the McKeen Pavilion located in the Milstein Hospital Building of the NYP/Columbia University Irving Medical Center in Upper Manhattan. The McKeen Pavilion provides guests with hotel-quality accommodations in a hospital setting.

In 2013, the NYP/Weill Cornell Medical Center presented a new face to the community with the renovation of its main entrance on 68th Street. In place of the hospital's original red awning, HOK designed a new glass and stainless-steel canopy that made the building more inviting and accessible. The award-winning design included a renovation of the historic lobby.

In 2014, NYP unveiled its new HOK-designed Irving Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the NYP/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The unit features a specialized airflow system to protect patients with weakened immune systems, high-tech nurses’ stations for individual patient monitoring and 18 patient rooms that incorporate biophilic design elements such as access to natural light, images of nature and natural wood finishes.

HOK's interiors team brought contemporary updates to NYP’s historic Whitney Boardroom in 2014. The renovation added new AV technology, an ADA-compliant ramp, new finishes and furniture, walnut paneling and stadium seating.
