“The students I’ve talked to are in awe. They are in awe of the building as well as the offerings we’re able to bring in.”
The university’s objective was to create a space that promotes healthy living while showcasing the natural beauty surrounding the campus.
Working closely with USU students and faculty, HOK’s Experience Design group researched the scenic regions around the facility, including Logan Canyon, Bear River Range, Bear River Valley and the Wellsville Range. These natural landscapes influenced the new building’s orientation and informed all placemaking decisions.
Using accurate topographic maps as a basis for the design, the vision was to mirror the landscape with an energetic, compelling graphic solution. The Experience Design team created dynamic maps of key locations and trail systems around the campus. Large-scale local photography, dimensional rock walls, and custom wayfinding and signage that imitates geologic forms connect users to the outdoors.
The facility has helped USU recruit prospective students. It promotes a sense of pride throughout the campus community and establishes a space that motivates the growing student body to pursue healthy lifestyles.
