HOK’s Vivien Chen Earns National Interior Design Award From ASID
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) honored HOK’s Vivien Chen as a rising leader in the interior design profession.
Vivien Chen, an interior designer in HOK’s Atlanta studio, has been named a 2018 ASID “Ones to Watch” recipient and scholar. The honor recognizes leaders who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential and a willingness to push the boundaries of the interior design profession. As an ASID scholar, Chen will also participate in a two-year leadership development training program that emphasizes experiential learning, coaching and mentoring. Winners of the Ones to Watch award and scholarship were announced at a July 19 ceremony in Washington, D.C.
“Vivien’s work ethic, attention to detail, ability to communicate and document design, and desire to see her designs through construction make her unique in a way I have only seen from a handful of designers in my more than twenty-year career,” said Betsy Nurse, IIDA, director of interiors for HOK’s Atlanta studio.
Chen joined HOK in 2015 and has worked on a variety of interior design projects such as the Atlantic Capital Bank headquarters (above), Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s new multidisciplinary building and Nextran’s Customer Experience Center.
Chen is an active leader with the Georgia chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and currently chairs its committee for the IIDA Leaders Breakfast and has participated on the board as the Hospitality Forum leader. She is also an alumni mentor and a board coordinator for the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Interior Design Alumni Network.
As a native of Australia who also has lived in China before landing in Atlanta, Chen attributes her unique design aesthetic to her diverse background and credits her dad, a developer, for teaching her the critical thinking skills needed to solve complex design problems. Chen received a Bachelor of Fine Art in Interior Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
