Zhuhai Lovers’ Road Redevelopment

Zhuhai, China

Lovers’ Road South is a key transportation and public improvement project for the future megacity of the Pearl River Delta.

Founded as one of China’s first special economic zones, Zhuhai is rapidly growing as a modern city known for its beautiful, long coastline and strategic location as a regional transportation hub across the bay from Hong Kong.

HOK created a sustainable master plan for the redevelopment of Lovers’ Road, which connects key districts in Zhuhai, as well as the east and south waterfront facing Macau, and the gateway of the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai Bridge.

The plan creates a green framework of cultural, entertainment and civic destinations that activate the waterfront and catalyze development.

Public realm improvements include streetscape enhancements and a new gateway to the city’s central business district, as well as numerous parks.

The project includes a transit plaza at the new regional light rail station, waterfront promenades with local cultural features, custom-designed road lighting systems and bus shelters.

All the plan’s components are informed by the local landscape ecology and are intended to advance Zhuhai’s “Garden City” brand.
