Walter Klassen FX Headquarters

Toronto, Canada

Walter Klassen FX, a powerhouse in the film industry’s special effects realm, sought a new headquarters that mirrored its innovative spirit. HOK designed its new space in Toronto’s Studio District, creating a collaborative, tech-forward environment that seamlessly blends creativity with practicality.

Our interior design features a two-section, open-space floor plan that promotes interaction and integration between departments while efficiently using the available space. The front section serves as a showroom for clients, displaying props and art installations. The back section houses the manufacturer’s work areas, carefully concealing the noisiest, messiest areas to ensure a seamless client experience.

The design incorporates advanced technology throughout the space to enhance efficiency and employee productivity. This includes a seamless photo/video wall known as a Cyclorama, a curved, all-white background used for in-house prop photography and client costume fittings. The space also features robust exhaust systems to protect workers and props, as well as enclosed rooms with acoustic treatments for private conversations and noise isolation.

Sustainability was a key design focus, with construction limited to essential partitions and existing lighting, furniture and equipment reused whenever possible. HOK’s team selected durable, rigorously tested finishes.

The project prioritizes inclusivity. The headquarters provides private rooms and adaptable workspaces to accommodate employees’ diverse needs and foster a sense of belonging and equity.

In addition to the client, HOK collaborated with project manager CBRE and construction manager mform construction Group. The result is a headquarters that meets Walter Klassen FX’s current needs while positioning the company for future growth and success.
