As cyberattacks grow more frequent and sophisticated, protecting digital infrastructure has become one of the world’s most urgent challenges. Traditional computer labs can’t replicate the complexity and pressure of real-time threats. The University of Ottawa and IBM set out to create a new kind of learning environment. They envisioned a Cyber Range that would immerse students, researchers and partners in realistic simulations to strengthen Canada’s cybersecurity capabilities and safeguard public systems.
Design Solution
Located within the university’s new Cyber Hub, a multidisciplinary center dedicated to cybersecurity and safety, the uOttawa–IBM Cyber Range is among the first of its kind in Canada and the world’s first academic-industry partnership of this type. HOK collaborated with the university and IBM to design a hands-on training and research environment that mirrors the pace and dynamics of real cyberattacks.
Key spaces include:
- Control room: A mission-critical space where the university, IBM and other partners monitor and evaluate simulated cyber events.
- Simulation room: Outfitted with digital displays, individual workstations and desk phones, this room allows participants to defend against simulated attacks in real time. An adaptive lighting system shifts from green and blue to red as threat levels escalate, heightening situational awareness.
- Broadcast room: A designated area for participants to practice crisis communications, from reporting breaches to media briefings and public updates.
Flexible lounge seating, hoteling stations, quiet rooms and offices throughout the facility support teamwork, reflection and productivity. The cohesive interior blends aesthetics with robust technical performance.
Impact
By turning cybersecurity education into an immersive, real-world experience, the Cyber Range helps close the global skills gap and strengthens resilience against digital threats. The facility fosters interdisciplinary research, accelerates workforce training and empowers students and professionals to protect communities and organizations from the evolving dangers of the digital age.
