UCHealth Strategic and Facility Master Planning

Denver, Colorado

University of Colorado Health (UCHealth) is a nonprofit healthcare system with headquarters in Aurora on the Anschutz Medical Campus, which is the Rocky Mountain region’s only academic medical center. In recent years the hospital’s patient volumes and programs have been expanding along with the fast-growing population in the Denver metropolitan area.

HOK’s Healthcare Consulting team developed a comprehensive strategy and facility master plan that responds to the increasing complexity and acuity faced by UCHealth in its ambulatory care settings.

To determine the optimal size and distribution for UCHealth’s ambulatory network, the team analyzed market and demographic data, utilization rates and referral patterns. We studied UCHealth’s clinical operations and provided recommendations for new operational efficiencies that would immediately boost clinical capacity on the Anschutz campus by 25 percent. The team also created new guidelines for space allocation. Together, these solutions provided UCHealth with short-term solutions for accommodating the rising demand for outpatient services.

The strategy recommended that UCHealth develop a multidisciplinary, tertiary ambulatory care hub on its Anschutz campus and distribute primary and secondary care services in community-based practices across the Denver area. The plan also advised UCHealth to create comprehensive specialty centers for specific diseases.
