Nationwide Children’s Hospital wanted an inspiring and flexible environment for its specialized seventh floor, home to neonatal and medical surgery as well as the hospital’s Special Pathogens Unit. HOK’s full renovation of the floor creates an uplifting and adaptable space that promotes healing for infant patients, new mothers and their families.
A life-size wooden animal friend greets visitors as they exit the elevator, creating a cheery sense of welcome. Additional animal and nature imagery serves multiple purposes by providing wayfinding, reinforcing themes of playfulness and calm, and connecting the hospital to the four seasons of central Ohio.
Family amenities, such as sleep rooms and a patient lounge, provide loved ones with comfortable spaces to gather and rest during long stays. Flexible medical surgery rooms can adapt to accommodate the Special Pathogens Unit during outbreaks and other crises.
