The NFL’s Miami Dolphins needed to transform their aging stadium into a more comfortable, fan-focused venue without missing a single home game. HOK’s design modernizes the facility, showcases Miami’s energy and culture, and creates a destination for major events in South Florida.
Design Solutions
Renovations unfolded over three offseasons to avoid disrupting the NFL schedule. The first phase replaced every seat and introduced new fan environments, including the Field Club, North Sideline Club and corner terraces. “Living Room” boxes, complete with recliners, programmable high-definition TVs and exclusive access to the premium 72 Club lounge, combine the comfort of home with the excitement of game day.
The following phase introduced the open-air canopy, the stadium’s defining architectural feature. Its lightweight, elegant structure provides shade and weather protection for fans while amplifying crowd noise, creating an unmistakable home-field advantage.
The final phase renewed all premium spaces on the 200 Club and 200 Mezzanine Suite levels. HOK collaborated with Rockwell Group to design two new types of sideline clubs and end zone suites, each tailored to different fan experiences.
Local culture is woven throughout the stadium with murals by Miami-based artists, a custom wayfinding and branding system and the use of regional materials. These elements help create a sense of place and celebrate South Florida’s identity.
Impact
Hard Rock Stadium’s flexible design, enhanced amenities and cultural expression embody Miami’s reputation as a dynamic and welcoming destination. The modernization elevated the fan experience and positioned Hard Rock Stadium as a preferred venue for major global events, including concerts, college football championship games, Formula One Grand Prix events, Super Bowl LIV in 2020 and the 2026 World Cup.
