Cummins Technical Center

Columbus, Indiana

Inside a 1968 modernist landmark that has driven Cummins’ innovation for over 50 years, HOK’s renovation design creates a workplace that propels the company’s R&D into the future while preserving an important piece of Columbus’ architectural heritage. The design thoughtfully transforms the company’s original technical center into a collaborative environment for developing next-generation power technologies.

The six-story tower, originally designed by mid-century modernist Harry Weese, sits in Columbus’ celebrated architectural district. While preserving the distinctive exterior, HOK’s design transformed 72,000 square feet of interior space across five floors into an environment that supports 500 engineers and researchers developing Cummins’ next-generation technologies.

A new interconnecting stair serves as the heart of the workplace, linking two vibrant social hubs that spark interaction between floors. The design scatters more than 90 conference rooms throughout the building, ranging from intimate focus rooms to larger spaces with stadium-style seating. Soft lab zones and collaborative areas let engineering teams easily shift between heads-down work and group innovation sessions.

The workplace puts people first, with quiet spaces for reflection, nursing rooms, gender-neutral restrooms and even treadmill desks that promote movement during the workday. The building’s extensive windows flood the space with natural light, while upgraded lighting systems and new window treatments help maintain comfort and cut energy use.

Subtle design touches honor Cummins’ heritage, like the plus (+) symbols integrated into key spaces—a nod to the iconic logos created by famed graphic designer Paul Rand. These elements connect the modern workplace to the company’s long history of innovation.

F.A. Wilhelm Construction Co. was the contractor for this three-year renovation project.
