The renovation of Boston Consulting Group’s (BCG) Calgary office reflects a sophisticated evolution of the modern consulting workplace. Building on HOK’s longstanding relationship with BCG—including work in Toronto, Montreal and Houston—the Calgary project reimagines the office to support the firm’s hybrid work model while reinforcing its culture of professionalism and collaboration.
HOK led a strategic, three-phase construction approach that allowed the office to continue operations while transforming it into a future-ready, high-performance workplace.
Flexibility and adaptability guided the design. The refreshed layout introduces a range of work settings, including bookable offices, touchdown desks, collaborative zones and an innovative “case team room” concept. The case team rooms feature custom sit-stand tables with integrated retractable monitors, supporting both focus work and agile collaboration. A multi-use space serves as a central hub for town halls, social events and informal meetings, encouraging connection, inclusivity and movement throughout the workplace.
To maintain visual continuity with the original office, HOK layered hospitality-inspired materials over the existing design palette. Rich black wood paneling, checkered carpeting, curated wallcoverings and biophilic accents infuse the space with warmth and refinement. A hand-crafted waffle ceiling in the café introduces a bespoke focal point that adds sophistication.
The design prioritizes inclusivity and neurodiversity through material and lighting choices that reduce sensory overstimulation. Abundant natural light is balanced with soft, layered lighting to create a calming environment. Acoustic treatments in the workplace minimize distractions and support deep focus.
The sustainable project reused substantial portions of the existing infrastructure, finishes and systems to reduce construction waste. Materials were selected for durability, low VOC emissions and environmental performance. Efficient lighting and smart HVAC zoning contribute to long-term energy savings and lower carbon emissions.
BCG’s refreshed Calgary office embodies the firm’s identity while setting a new standard for flexible, inclusive and resilient workplace design.
