Miami-Dade County Civil Courthouse, Michigan Medicine Health Care Pavilion and City of Hope’s cancer specialty hospital reach completion milestones.
Three significant HOK-designed projects had ribbon cuttings in November. The following buildings represent the latest in human-centered healthcare and justice design.
City of Hope Cancer Specialty Hospital (Irvine, California)

This new 73-bed facility connects to City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center to expand comprehensive cancer care, research and clinical trials on the organization’s Irvine campus. It is the only cancer specialty hospital in Orange County.
The Hensel Phelps + HOK design-build project follows a hospitality-inspired approach to patient care with en suite bathrooms, concealed clinical utilities, large windows offering mountain views and calming material palettes. Treatment spaces include intensive care and medical-surgical units, operating and procedure rooms, and an Evaluation and Treatment Center, which offers around-the-clock specialized urgent care to cancer patients who might otherwise need to seek treatment in an emergency room.
Osvaldo N. Soto Miami-Dade Justice Center (Miami, Florida)

Miami-Dade County’s new 23-story courthouse replaced a nearly century-old facility that no longer supported the needs of Miami’s growing justice system. The new 620,000-sq.-ft. facility contains 46 jury courtrooms and a shell floor that can accommodate the addition of four more courtrooms in the future. At 474 feet tall, it is among the tallest government-use buildings in Miami, and it creates a new anchor to the downtown civic skyline.
Transparency, security and dignity guided HOK’s design. The building’s adjacency to a commuter rail line improves public connections to the courthouse and supports the sustainability goals for the project, which is targeting LEED Silver certification.
University of Michigan Health D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion (Ann Arbor, Michigan)

U-M’s newest hospital is now open to the public. The 12-story, 264-bed facility is Michigan Medicine’s largest increase in adult inpatient capacity in 40 years, advancing the health system’s ability to provide specialized care, comprehensive medical training and research.
Each of the hospital’s 264 private patient rooms is equipped for intensive care. The building has 20 operating rooms, an intraoperative MRI, three interventional radiology suites and facilities for neurology services. Otolaryngology, oral maxillofacial surgery, spine care, cardiovascular medicine and surgery, and thoracic surgery are also among the hospital’s specialty care services.
The hospital is on track to receive LEED Platinum certification.
