HOK-Designed Stanford Center for Academic Medicine Wins Two National AIA Awards

The Stanford University School of Medicine’s Center for Academic Medicine has received two national honors from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), earning awards in both the Education Facility and Healthcare Design categories.

The four-story Center for Academic Medicine supports Stanford’s staff working long hours in hospitals and clinics. The building offers curated spaces for work and respite, including offices, conference rooms, collaboration and education zones, a fitness center and café.

Taking full advantage of Northern California’s temperate climate, 20% of the program is located outdoors. Three interconnected office wings rise above a landscaped courtyard, filled with native plantings and seating areas. Porches, balconies, sky bridges and covered walkways extend from the building, creating a treehouse-like experience that enhances occupant well-being.

“These awards from the national AIA represent the best in architecture—projects that elevate design and inspire innovation,” said Paul Woolford, design principal in HOK’s San Francisco studio. “It’s an honor to collaborate with the Stanford School of Medicine on a project that prioritizes wellness, sustainability and connection to nature.”

HOK provided architecture, interiors, landscape architecture, structural and MEP engineering, planning, sustainable design, energy modeling and workplace consulting services for the Center.
