Orlando Magic and AdventHealth Open New Training Center and Clinic

Designed by HOK and constructed by Balfour Beatty, the 130,000-sq.-ft. facility provides the Magic with a high-performance training facility that accommodates athletes on and off the court.

Developed in partnership with AdventHealth, the building also includes an orthopedic and sports medicine clinic open to the public.

“This collaboration between the Magic and AdventHealth has created a facility that uniquely serves professional athletes and the local community,” said Kyle Wedel, LEED AP, senior project architect at HOK. “The building’s design enhances the athlete and patient experience, supporting athletic performance, training, recovery, sports medicine, health and wellness.”

Known as the AdventHealth Training Center, the state-of-the-art facility includes two full-size basketball courts. Observation balconies at the court level and from the floor above allow for elevated viewing. An expansive locker room sits adjacent to the courts, creating an efficient path of travel for athletes.

The project emphasizes the importance of rest and recovery on performance. Indoor-outdoor training spaces include turf areas, an incline ramp and stairs, a force plate, traditional weight racks, Keiser strength machines, a medicine ball wall and a lap pool. Recovery amenities include an altitude chamber, massage suites, NormaTec suite, hyperbaric chamber, float pod, a cryotherapy room as well as hot and cold recovery pools and a treadmill pool.

“We want to thank HOK for assisting us in making our goals and vision a reality,” said Magic CEO Alex Martins. “Through much hard work, a commitment to local women-and minority-owned contractors and with a great deal of determination,  we have developed a world-class training center for our Magic players, coaches and support staff that is stacked with the resources and technology to make it one of the best in the NBA. Our players, coaches and staff can’t wait to get in and get started.”

Additional amenities within the three-story building include a private dining space, lounge areas, a 1,600-sq.-ft. outdoor kitchen, a dining patio with a grill and smoker, and a large patio with lush landscaping that encourages the team to enjoy Orlando’s climate. A large team living room includes a nutrition bar and full kitchen including staffed cooking stations, grab-‘n’-go items, kombucha and cold brew coffee on tap.

Natural materials, including stone and sleek wood walls, fill the practice, training and office spaces. Graphics showcasing the Magic’s brand and legacy punctuate the hospitality spaces and front offices.

“AdventHealth and the Orlando Magic have a shared a longtime commitment to inspiring and helping our neighbors be the healthiest they can be. Through our partnership, we’ve cared for Central Florida in a variety of ways, and I’m excited for this new opportunity to expand our philosophy of whole-person care to whole-athlete care,” said AdventHealth Central Florida Division President and CEO Randy Haffner. “Whether you’re working to get back to playing in the yard with your grandkids, completing your first 5k or dreaming of going pro, our sports medicine experts are ready to support your personal health and athletic goals. The AdventHealth Training Center is a resource for all, and I’m excited for this next chapter in our partnership.”

The 33,000-sq.-ft. AdventHealth clinic on the third floor offers orthopedics, primary care, sports medicine, imaging, rehabilitation and sports performance care for both the Orlando Magic and the public. The clinic’s connectivity to the training facility allows it to serve as an innovative health and wellness hub combining holistic medicine, science and research to optimize sports performance.
