Aviation News Roundup: HOK’s Expertise Showcased in Multiple Outlets

From design competitions and expanded terminals to exploring trends in aviation design, various media outlets have recently featured HOK’s work.

Passenger Terminal World, Airport World and Airport Improvement magazines have all highlighted HOK’s expertise in Aviation + Transportation (A+T) planning and design. Learn more about each of the projects covered below.

Zurich Airport

A design team of BIG + HOK won the competition to replace the aging Dock A at Zurich Airport. The new Dock A—including gates, airside retail, lounges, offices, the new air traffic control tower and an extension of the immigration hall—will be the next milestone in the airport’s expansion. Architect’s Newspaper, Airport Business, Passenger Terminal World and other outlets have covered the story.

Designing Outdoor Spaces at Airports

Airport World magazine published an article co-authored by HOK’s Matt Needham, director of A+T, on trends in designing outdoor spaces at airports. From spaces showcasing nearby mountain ranges to lush landscaping and outdoor terraces, the article referenced HOK’s designs at LaGuardia Airport as well as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Tampa international airports.

Salt Lake City International Airport and Tampa International Airport

Salt Lake City and Tampa international airports, both featuring terminals designed by HOK, recently ranked in the top ten of J.D. Power’s 2021 North America Airport Satisfaction Study.

Airport Improvement magazine also covered the SkyCenter One project at Tampa International Airport, which recently achieved LEED Platinum certification. The HOK-designed office building houses the airport operations center, emergency operations, a data center, airport staff and space for commercial leasing.

HOK’s Jake Baker, senior project designer, shared how HOK and partners collaborated with the client to ensure the building—set between two active runways—would meet the needs of its users while avoiding disruptions to the runways.

Will Rogers World Airport

Passenger Terminal World magazine’s June issue covered trends in seating design at airports, showcasing the HOK and FSB team’s terminal expansion and renovation at Will Rogers World Airport.

Airport Business magazine also shared a story on the Will Rogers World Airport expansion, highlighting the project’s large concourses and security checkpoints, new technology and light-filled “town square” space to put passengers at ease through their travel journey.

San Diego International Airport

Passenger Terminal World magazine recently highlighted HOK’s work with San Diego International Airport, including a new administration building. HOK’s Frank Cauthen, senior project designer, shared how the four-story building design prioritizes health and wellness for its occupants and is on track to achieve a minimum LEED Silver certification.
