Ottawa Police Service Building

Ottawa, Ontario

This state-of-the art building establishes a new architectural standard for police facilities in Ottawa.

HOK worked closely with the Ottawa Police Service to understand it needs, culture and vision. A “day in the life” survey revealed the everyday activities of police officers in their workplace. Survey findings shaped the design goals including prioritizing the personal safety and security of building occupants while conveying a sense of openness and accountability to the public. Carefully structured security elements ensure the protection and comfort of officers, visitors, media, victims, witnesses and suspects.

The team’s visioning sessions with key police representatives informed other design features including durability, accessibility and advanced technologies—all with a focus on decreasing operating costs.

The building’s contemporary form and materials complement the surrounding high-tech community. A highly identifiable, double-height entry beacon establishes a welcoming street presence.

The LEED-NC Gold building includes numerous sustainable design strategies, including abundant natural light, highly efficient radiant heating and cooling ceiling panels, displacement ventilation using 100 percent outside air, and recycled and locally sourced materials. Energy modeling of the HVAC system and building envelope indicated potential energy savings of 60 percent.

HOK collaborated on the design with Kingston-based Shoalts and Zaback Architects.
