Emory University prepared a budget for its new 360,000-sq.-ft., high-performance Health Sciences Research Building II, which included a multitude of complex spaces. The challenge for the design and construction team was then to stay within this budget.

HOK Regional Leader of S+T Chirag Mistry will join John Saad, managing principal at R.G. Vanderweil Engineers, and Fred Tull, preconstruction services manager at JE Dunn Construction, in a one-hour session describing how they were able to design within the budget, even with the extra high-performance criteria mandated for the project. The team used a “Design Assist–Target Value Design” strategy in which design and construction team members evaluated and validated every design decision together. Trade partners were then invited to work with the design team to obtain vendor pricing for smart decision-making.

This year’s Lab Design Conference will be a flexible schedule of live and on-demand sessions. This live presentation will take place from 2:00 to 3:00 PM ET on Nov. 17.
