The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) cares for many violent, mentally ill inmates. Its new mental health and medical correctional facility, which will be on the same site as the existing Joliet Treatment Center, addresses the complex needs of this inmate population. The design goal is to create a national model for mental health treatment in corrections.
This purpose-built inpatient facility will deliver world-class treatment for 200 incarcerated men and women who struggle with serious mental illness and to those who require long-term skilled nursing care.
HOK’s design provides access to daylight in each individual cell and dayroom while maintaining security requirements. Views and access to exterior courtyards enhance emotional and physical well-being.
A modern administration building, central utility plant, kitchen, laundry and recreation facilities combine to help provide exceptional care.
In addition to exceeding all correctional standards, the facility will meet public health standards and be fully ADA compliant.
