This 1,500-bed, four-story detention center is located 25 miles west of Atlanta in Douglasville, Georgia, on a 36-acre site master planned for 600,000 square feet of future county office space.
By building the center next to the existing urban courthouse, the county saved money while making it more accessible. There are no fences, with all the maximum-security measures contained within a building that resembles an upscale office facility.
This was first large-scale, new construction adult detention facility and law enforcement center in Georgia to achieve LEED certification. To reduce energy consumption while creating a safe, healthy environment, the design brings in natural daylight. “Borrowed” light reaches the cells through glazing in the dayroom and outdoor recreation yards without requiring the typical slit cell windows.
