Boutique Design Magazine Recognizes HOK’s Julia Monk as a Leading Woman in Hospitality

Based in HOK’s Hong Kong studio, Julia Monk is a licensed architect and interior designer and serves as director of the firm’s Hospitality practice. In being named to Boutique Design’s 2018 list of Power Players, Monk joins 11 other women executives identified as industry thought leaders.

Excerpted from Boutique Design:

The biggest changes she has seen in hospitality design: “We have gone from conspicuous consumption to conscientious consumption to experiential. The next step of hospitality experiences is transformational. We are growing into this organically. Actually, I would like to work with the leaders who embody that. Chip Conley is a great example with his Modern Elder Academy. On another note, I expect more integration of architecture, landscape architecture and interiors.”

The importance of sustainable design: “I became LEED certified in 2005 and encouraged my partners and associates to do so as well. … HOK shares those priorities. For the past six years DesignIntelligence has ranked HOK as a leader in sustainable and high-performance design. Internally we have a sustainability leader, Anica Landreneau, who oversees the integration of sustainable principles on our projects. I am proud to be part of a firm that upholds sustainability to this level.”

How technology is changing the design process: Our typical interior team has been expanded from lighting, signage/wayfinding and art to include AV. In terms of using technology in our design work, hand-drawn sketches may work on concept design, but computer realism is now a requirement for all of our schematic presentations with updated CGRs at the end of documentation to reflect the developed design. We are now experimenting with virtual reality mock-up rooms and, of course, use Revit for most of our projects.

The most rewarding aspect of her three decades in design: “The many people I have mentored and where they are today.”
