A New Era for SMU Basketball

Southern Methodist University Moody Coliseum Renovation and Expansion
Dallas, Texas, USA

“It hasn’t lost any of the old charm, but everything is new. That’s what makes it so great.”

Larry Brown
Head basketball coach, Southern Methodist University

With this renovation and expansion of Moody Coliseum and the addition of the new Miller Event Center, Southern Methodist University has one of the country’s top collegiate arenas and event centers.

Home to SMU basketball since 1956 and Mustang volleyball since the program’s inception in 1996, Moody Coliseum is a campus and Dallas landmark. The university’s move to the American Athletic Conference, along with the nearby construction of the George W. Bush Presidential Center, led SMU to commission a comprehensive renovation and expansion.

HOK’s challenge was to transform the coliseum into a state-of-the-art sporting venue with modern amenities while preserving its rich history and tradition.

Significant modifications to the seating bowl reduced it to an intimate 7,000 seats while allowing for the creation of premium seating products that generate new revenue for SMU.

HOK’s design improves the arena’s seating and hospitality options and greatly enhances its circulation, accessibility and amenities to provide an exceptional game-time experience for SMU fans.

A new Hall of Fame highlights SMU’s rich heritage with environmental graphics to showcase the venue’s history through memorabilia, artwork and pictures displayed throughout the building.

An addition on the north side of the Coliseum houses the Miller Events Center, which includes the Miller Champions Club, premium suites with courtside views and a balcony terrace available during men’s basketball games to patrons with suite, floor, loge and club seats.

A custom 9-foot x 24-foot scoreboard hangs over center court with four high-definition video boards. The scoreboard was custom-sized due to low ceilings and the rectangular nature of the seating bowl.

Upgrades to team and staff areas streamline operations while supporting the university’s objective of attracting and retaining top student athletes, coaches and staff.

In addition to reusing the existing building and the brownfield redevelopment, sustainable design strategies for the LEED Silver project include highly efficient heating and cooling systems, drought-resistant plantings and a new connection to the campus graywater system.

“With this renovation and expansion of Moody Coliseum and the addition of the new Miller Event Center, SMU will be home to one of the finest collegiate arenas and events centers in the country,” said SMU President R. Gerald Turner.
