University of Florida Lake Nona Research Center
Orlando, Florida, USA

“All of the HOK team have been extremely responsive to the needs of the faculty and the Lake Nona development. We have been impressed with their BIM capabilities, their team approach with the construction manager and the willingness to meet the goals of UF for a minimum Gold LEED building.”

Carol J. Walker
Assistant Vice President, Facilities Planning & Construction

This LEED Platinum academic and research facility is a dynamic new addition to the Lake Nona Medical City.

The new building allows the University of Florida to establish collaborative relationships with the adjacent Burnham Institute, Lake Nona Medical City institutions and other Florida research entities.

The form of the new center represents the innovative, collaborative and life-changing activities housed inside. With its contrasting colors, shapes and forms, the building presents a dynamic image from all directions.

In addition to the research programs, the UF College of Pharmacy’s Orlando campus moved to this building. The vibrant, contemporary learning environment will also be a research generator for UF’s College of Pharmacy and College of Medicine.

Research areas include two floors of open laboratories made up of large, “ballroom”-plan island bench areas with mobile sinks and casework supported by fume hood and BSC alcoves. Labs have views of a wooded preserve to the south. An internal glass wall provides visual connections to offices.

The building materials integrate aesthetic values, quality and sustainability for a high-performance, contemporary architectural design. Together, the materials form a distinguished structure reflecting the dignity, enterprise, vigor and ambition of the University of Florida.

The innovative LEED Platinum sustainable design strategies include daylight harvesting, sun-shading devices, chilled-beam technology, heat pump recovery for reheat, solar thermal and photovoltaic panels, and green roofs.
