K-State developed the new Olathe Innovation Campus as a hub for top educators, scientists, students and entrepreneurs seeking to lead advances in animal health, food safety and security.
Through an integrated design-build selection process, the university selected the HOK-Weitz Company team to create a campus master plan and build the first phase, the 108,000-sq.-ft. International Animal Health and Food Safety Institute.
The campus master plan connects user groups and promotes K-State’s visibility in the fast-growing area of bioscience. Supporting the idea that healthy ecologies sustain healthy individuals, HOK’s plan integrates the natural and built environment. Drawing on existing landscape features gives the campus a strong sense of place.
With its double-volume glass lobby, juxtaposition of raw materials and impressive water feature, the institute serves as an iconic entry to the campus. Punched openings in the curtain wall help bring natural light deep inside the space.
The building includes laboratories, classrooms, one of the area’s largest teaching kitchens, a 125-person auditorium, a public bistro and conference rooms. One-third of the building is made up of state-of-the-art labs available for private enterprises that want to collaborate with K-State researchers and students.
The architects, engineers and construction teams collaborated on a single building information model (BIM) throughout the design and construction process.
