The Peninsula Shanghai

Shanghai, China

Located along the historic Bund in the heart of Shanghai, the Peninsula Shanghai is a true “grand hotel” and urban destination.

The hotel is nestled among the sprawling English gardens of the former British Consulate. Guests enter through the gates of a walled courtyard with spectacular central water features. The natural surroundings of the hotel insulate guests from the city’s frantic pace.

HOK designed the 15-story, 235-key hotel as a modern translation of the colonial Art Deco style of the Bund’s 1920s and 1930s architecture. An adjacent 13-story building houses 40 residential apartments.

True to the neighborhood’s fabric, The Peninsula’s facade is composed of granite with gleaming bronze detail including mullions, decorative grilles and paneled artwork—all echoing the graciousness and grandeur of the colonial era.

To maximize floor space within the constrained site, HOK’s design sculpts the building’s proportions into a series of setbacks that begin at the 10th floor. Each setback creates a terrace oriented toward historic buildings along the Bund. Filled with flora, the terraces offer stunning views while serving as vibrant social spaces.

The hotel’s grand lobby opens to a terrace overlooking the Huangpu River and consulate gardens. A signature rooftop restaurant and bar, ballroom, prefunction area and spa also have spacious terraces.

“Sandwiched between the Bund and the East Nanjing Road, the city’s busiest shopping district, the Peninsula Shanghai couldn’t be in a better spot,” noted Travel + Leisure in naming it Shanghai’s top-ranked hotel. “Jaw-dropping Art Deco interiors coupled with top-of-the-line facilities skillfully blend old and new, while the Peninsula Academy teaches guests classes in Chinese contemporary art, fashion design, and more. The hotel is also home to Shanghai’s only five-star spa, where fireplaces and heated floors make for a cozy retreat. The Michelin-starred Sir Elly’s Restaurant, meanwhile, is just icing on the cake.”
