A Luxury Hotel for the World’s Largest Medical Center

InterContinental Texas Medical Center Hotel
Houston, Texas, USA

This project includes the design of a new, luxury InterContinental Hotel at the Texas Medical Center in the heart of Houston.

The Texas Medical Center (TMC), which consists of 21 hospitals and welcomes more than 160,000 employees, students, patients and visitors each day, is the world’s largest life-sciences destination.

In creating InterContinental’s new hotel for the extensive medical community, HOK drew inspiration from historical context and nature in nearby Brays Bayou, Hermann Park and the Medical Center. George Hermann donated the land to create Hermann Park and also established Houston’s first public charitable hospital, the foundation for what is now known as the Texas Medical Center. With the park adjacent to the TMC, the result is an environment designed to invigorate guests.

At 21 stories tall and spanning 410,000 square feet, the TMC InterContinental will be the area’s only full-service luxury hotel, providing modern accomodations and upscale amenities for domestic and international guests. Highlights of the 353-room hotel include a signature InterContinental Club Lounge, 37 suites, restaurant and bar, outdoor pool, fitness center and medical suite. Additional features include nearly 12,000 square feet of meeting space made up of seven meeting and board rooms and a 7,800-sq.-ft. grand ballroom for use by the hotel and medical center.

Upon entry, the Bayou concept begins to take shape, drawing guests from the lobby to the lounge situated beneath the dynamic ceiling installation. Through the use of reflective surfaces and defined edges, the suspended lighting sculpture emphasizes the changing qualities of light—activating the corner and connection to the exterior. Behind the reception desk, a feature wall of staggered, rough-cut limestone and green moss illustrates an abstracted contour of Brays Bayou that embodies the relationship between the river and park. The ebb and flow of the Bayou continues on the level above into the meeting and event spaces with sculptural ballroom ceiling fixtures. Light cascades across the ceiling, highlighting (organic) layers reminiscent of a river bank, while clustered luminaires evoke the reflective qualities.
