Transforming Patient Care

Penn Medicine – Princeton Medical Center

Principles of evidence-based design and state-of-the-art technologies are transforming patient care at this new replacement hospital.

Designed by a joint venture of HOK and RMJM Hiller, the new hospital includes 266 private patient rooms, state-of-the-art emergency services, operating suites and ambulatory services and laboratories.

Based on its creation of “a positive, supportive and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors/careers and staff,” Building Better Healthcare UK named it Best International Healthcare Design Project, with judges calling the new hospital “inspirational.”

Drivers guiding the design included:

  • Creation of the most modern accommodations to treat high acuity patients.
  • Management of lower acuity patients in a day case setting.
  • An efficient, safe and friendly way of organizing services.
  • Creation of a welcoming, intuitive and convenient place for the local community.
  • Sustainability

To make the new hospital as easy and efficient as possible for patients, the design creates centers of care – including Cancer, Surgery, Testing and Treatment, Neuroscience, Emergency, Maternal-Child Health, Eating Disorders, Critical Care, Pediatrics, Cardiac and Pulmonary Care — that keep related services near each other.

The patient rooms, which are all private, are designed to reduce falls and minimize the risk of infection. Room amenities include wireless Internet access, dedicated ventilation and temperature control systems, and room service dining.

The design team used innovative strategies for conserving energy, minimizing impact on the surroundings and providing conditions that promote patient care and recovery. In addition to creating a healthier environment, the university expects to achieve energy operating cost savings of 25 percent compared to a similar building with a conventional energy infrastructure. Ventilation systems deliver 100 percent fresh air in critical patient care areas.
