Consisting of two levels with 11 aircraft gates accessed through a cylindrical glass concourse, the terminal provides a clear, efficient passenger flow.
From the mezzanine and concourse of the new terminal, passengers see the entire airfield against the scenic backdrop of the mountains and sky. Referencing Sendai’s “Garden City” image, the approach roads and parking areas are lined by dense groves of trees. The airport’s domestic and international wings are connected by a central garden atrium housing passenger amenities.
Restaurants and retail stores are concentrated on the mezzanine above the departure level. A ground-level plaza provides exhibition space and conference rooms for travelers and the community.
HOK designed the terminal in association with Nikken Sekkei Architects of Japan.
