A Recreation Center With a View

Utah State University Aggie Recreation Center
Logan, Utah, USA

“The students I’ve talked to are in awe. They are in awe of the building as well as the offerings we’re able to bring in.”

Chase Ellis
Director of Campus Recreation, Utah State University

The state-of-the-art Aggie Recreation Center creates a new physical and visual gateway for students to their surroundings.

Located on a prominent campus site, the design reflects the scenic landscape. The building is situated between Logan Canyon and Bear River Range to the east, the Bear River Valley to the northwest and the Wellsville Range to the southwest. The design of its orientation, form and interior spaces responds to the unique geography.

HOK designed the Aggie Recreation Center to connect students to their surroundings, activate a central corridor on campus and promote wellness in a comfortable, inviting and accessible environment. From the time the project began, Utah State University empowered students to drive the design process for this recreation center. They now feel a sense of ownership for the building, which strengthens their physical, emotional and mental health.

The new facility responds to a growing demand for recreation space on Utah State’s campus of more than 17,000 students. The state-of-the-art equipment and amenities engage users across all fitness levels. The center includes full-sized basketball and volleyball courts, a multi-activity court gym, an indoor running track, a climbing wall, a cardio loft, space for outdoor recreation programming, two group fitness studios, administrative offices and a student lounge.

The project team, which includes Salt Lake City-based AJC Architects, is pursuing LEED-NC Silver certification.
