A Modern Passage to India

Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 3
New Delhi, India

“For the first time, we will have a world-class hub.”

Binit Somaia
South Asia Director, Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation

Passenger Terminal World magazine described the airport as “India and Southeast Asia’s largest and most important aviation hub.”

This new world-class terminal for India’s second-busiest airport more than doubled Indira Gandhi International Airport’s passenger capacity. Built in just 37 months, the terminal is designed to serve 34 million passengers a year. A Businessweek story cited it as “a new benchmark for completing major projects” in India.

The nine-story terminal building has two piers, 78 gates, six check-in islands with 168 check-in counters and 95 immigration counters. Three of the 78 aerobridges support A380 aircraft. The terminal has 800 flight information display systems and 8,000 speakers.

Passenger amenities include spacious interiors, a 100-room transit hotel and 215,300 square feet of retail and concessions space. The terminal has its own Delhi Metro station.

Built with a glass and metal frame structure, Terminal 3 is India’s first airport building to receive LEED Gold certification. Sustainable design strategies include a northern orientation that reduces solar gain, optimum use of natural light, interior finishes with high recycled content and battery-powered vehicles for moving travelers between terminals. The water management and treatment program features more than 300 rainwater harvesting pits.

HOK and Mott MacDonald led the project, which included renovating and extending the existing international and domestic terminals.

Airports Council International has named the Indira Gandhi International Airport as one of the world’s best for service quality in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
