These guidelines describe how federal policies can leverage sustainable development to support the “triple bottom line” – people, planet and profits. They also address other tools and policies available to help set and achieve federal sustainability targets.
The guidelines approach sustainable development through the lens of ecological economics, which considers the economy as a subset of the environment.
To introduce concepts included in the guide, HOK led a workshop with the Federal Interagency Sustainability Working Group that was attended by representatives from dozens of federal agencies. HOK’s team drew on these discussions to provide the GSA’s purchasing and procurement staff members with simple tools for evaluating the sustainability of their decisions.
