A World Cup City Emerges in Qatar

FIFA Al Shamal City Competition
Al Shamal, Qatar

The plan provides a blueprint for a new city to host international teams and events during Qatar’s 2022 FIFA World Cup games.

Strategically positioned near the new rail link to Bahrain, the modern Al Shamal city will act as an international gateway and cultural center for Qatar. HOK’s master plan creates a self-sustaining city with interconnected “urban islands” and integrated sustainable systems.

With a wide range of open spaces, the master plan provides multiple areas for people to relax, reflect, gather and play. The city’s entire energy supply will be produced by a combination of solar and wind technologies as well as waste-to-energy facilities.

The compact city center combines offices with mixed-use developments, including retail, residential, entertainment and cultural facilities. The Central Market, Juma Mosque and Central Train Station signal the main gateway into the City Center district. Residential neighborhoods are based on models of 8,000 to 12,000 units oriented around town centers and connected through a light rail public transport system.

Urban agriculture will play a significant role in providing local produce and green space throughout the city. Programs based on environmental studies and agriculture will promote sustainable technologies and best practices that benefit the entire country.

HOK’s plan also provides for legacy facilities and housing developments that will live on after the World Cup.
