The city’s official AIDS memorial is located in the park, making it a popular destination for large civic events, including Pride celebrations. With such a variety of uses, the HOK team worked closely with city planners and community groups to collaboratively plan the park’s redesign.
By reorganizing existing components and integrating new elements, the team designed the space to serve multiple purposes. The colorful children’s area is divided into dry and wet play zones and updated with a rubberized splash pad and engaging play structures. An enclosed dog park features a dog drinking fountain and shower spray.
The redesigned AIDS memorial is now a prominent focal point of the public plaza. It also serves as a flexible area for community gatherings.
Other additions include a new plaza, additional seating, trees, pedestrian paths, specialty lighting, a wooden stage and improved lawns. A permeable surface and French drain alleviate the stormwater load on city infrastructure.
