Integrated Wayfinding and Branding for a New Airport Terminal

Salt Lake City International Airport Passenger Terminal
Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

“We are supporting the city’s goal of creating one of the world’s premier airports with an inspirational design that celebrates our region and provides an immediate sense of place. At the same time, developing a completely new terminal allows us to support the needs of our airport’s guests and the airlines as efficiently as possible.”

Maureen Riley
Former Salt Lake City Airport Executive Director

With the first phase scheduled to open in 2020, this new three-story terminal and concourse will replace 29 outdated structures, including three separate terminals and five concourses.

HOK’s design celebrates Utah’s natural beauty and reputation as an outdoor recreation hub. The airport is nestled between the Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake.

The Experience Design team is integrating wayfinding and branding with the new passenger terminal’s roadway approach, transit program, exterior architecture, interior space, advertising strategy and art program.

The design for each type of wayfinding signage includes a definition of type styles, colors, size and materials. Our team explored practical ways to graphically express the desired communication objectives while creating a holistic signage program.

Design considerations included the project budget, maintenance, lighting, ability to easily accommodate future upgrades and cost effectiveness—both upfront and over time.
