The Point Master Plan

Salt Lake City, Utah

Located near the intersection of two of Utah’s largest counties, in a fast-growing science and technology corridor known as “Silicon Slopes,” The Point project provides tremendous opportunities for redevelopment, priming the area as a driving force for the state’s economy. The Utah State Prison currently occupying the site will be relocated in 2022.

Conceived in collaboration with the Point of the Mountain Development Commission and the nonprofit Envision Utah, the master plan maps out the design for a 700-acre live-work-play community that encourages different scales of development and provides a sustainable framework for expected population and economic growth.

The design helps the region adapt to the growing economy, connects people to jobs and engages the site’s natural beauty.

Separate office and research districts located along landscaped canals support corporate technology, commercial incubation, academic research and industry partnerships. The high-density, mixed-use town center features residential and commercial activities.

The transportation system includes two new light-rail stations, human-scaled and walkable blocks, and dedicated bike lanes. The plan includes comprehensive monitoring of land use and transportation effectiveness based on livability and mobility, rather than single-aspect means of calculation and quantification.

An extensive public open space system highlights the natural landscapes and Utah’s outdoor culture. The walkable streetscape transitions into greenway corridors with multiuse paths for walkers, runners and cyclists. These interconnected paths link to popular trail systems.
