Renewing a San Francisco Landmark

Moscone Center Modernization
San Francisco, California, USA

“We are very proud to have the first convention center on the West Coast to earn LEED Gold for an existing building. This is now our city’s largest municipally owned green building. Receiving LEED Gold on the Moscone Center demonstrates once again that San Francisco is at the center of sustainability and innovation.”

Ed Lee
Mayor, City of San Francisco

Three decades after designing the original George R. Moscone Center, HOK designed a renovation that has rebranded and renewed the famed convention center.

A recent renovation provided the opportunity to rethink the entire interior environment and to breathe new life into the South, North and connector buildings. The goals were to modernize the center, to create a sense of place by highlighting unique aspects of the Bay Area and to establish a truly sustainable environment.

HOK’s design introduces bright colors and graphics, incorporating San Francisco’s distinct travel brand and geography.

The original building – Moscone South – is closest to the high-tech Silicon Valley corridor south of San Francisco. The colors and design details in the South lobby reflect the region’s identity as an innovation hub.

In Moscone North, the design tells the story of the Bay Area’s breathtaking parks and gardens, as well as the natural beauty of the redwood forests and Napa Valley and Sonoma vineyards to the north.

Drawing on the underground connector’s role linking the South and North halls, the design of this space uses the metaphor of the Golden Gate Bridge, with a color palette matching its “international orange.”

The renovations include updates to public spaces as well as technology upgrades, improved ventilation and lighting systems, enhanced operational efficiencies and universal access for all visitors.

The energy efficient building system upgrades and sustainable operations make this one of the most environmentally friendly U.S. convention centers. The project earned LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance Gold certification.

“We are proud to offer our customers the advanced level of sustainability that makes San Francisco stand out as a leading destination,” said Joe D’Alessandro, president and CEO of the San Francisco Travel Association.
