A Flexible Venue for Campus and Community

Grand Canyon University Arena
Phoenix, Arizona, USA

“This new arena will completely transform the West Valley. … It represents an exciting new era in GCU’s 62-year history.”

Brian Mueller
President and CEO, Grand Canyon University

Grand Canyon University Arena enhances the campus experience for students while providing the Phoenix region with a new landmark sports and entertainment destination.

The design creates a welcoming public face for GCU and expresses the energy of the campus. Located where the campus meets the community, the arena has an 80,000-sq.-ft. grass entry plaza and features a glass exterior. This transparency provides ample daylight inside the arena while visually linking occupants to the community. An outdoor balcony offers expansive views of the campus and mountains surrounding the Valley of the Sun.

Designed for flexibility, the arena can accommodate all types of events while preserving excellent sightlines for each. The multipurpose venue hosts GCU basketball and volleyball games, wrestling matches, university and community events, and concerts. Seating capacity and acoustics can be adjusted for each specific occasion. Five high-definition video boards rival those found in leading professional sports venues.

HOK and Architekton designed the arena to support GCU’s expansion plans for the 100-acre Camelback Road campus and to accommodate a significant enrollment increase. The arena opened just 15 months after the university broke ground on the project.
