San Francisco Office Is First Permanent Location Outside of St. Louis

To support its increasingly diverse client and project opportunities, the firm begins a strategic geographic expansion into high-growth markets. In 1966, HOK is selected to design the Cecil H. Green Graduate Library, an addition to the venerable Hoover Library at Stanford University. The commission means opening a project office in the Bay Area. HOK’s leaders agree to do so and the firm’s San Francisco office begins operating as the first permanent location outside of St. Louis.

The office grows with high quality commissions in San Francisco and throughout the area, including Levi’s Plaza, Xerox Research Center, the George R. Moscone Convention Center, Saks Fifth Avenue at Union Square and Fairmont Hotel.

By 1974, HOK’s San Francisco office is well prepared for its largest commission: the 3 million-sq.-ft. King Khalid International Airport Terminal Complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
