Committing to Washington, DC, and Dallas

Committing to Washington, DC, and Dallas

In 1968, HOK establishes a small business development office in the nation’s capital, led by retired US Corps of Engineers Brigadier General, Robert E. Mathe. The office secures assignments such as the US Marine Barracks, expansion of the Eero Saarinen terminal building at Dulles International Airport and the Sheraton Park Hotel.

This office also serves as a strategic location for HOK to develop contacts with various federal agencies.

Also in 1968, HOK is hired as executive architect to lead a joint venture to design the sprawling new Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. A project team office is set up in Dallas.

In 1975, anticipating the dedication of the National Air and Space Museum, HOK acquires its associate firm for the project, well-respected Mills and Petticord. HOK now has a fully-developed architectural and interior design office in Washington, DC.

At the same time, HOK recognizes the growth opportunities in Dallas offered by its airport project presence and commits to opening a permanent office in Dallas. This new full-service architectural venture is housed in the 56-story First International Tower, an HOK design.
